Duckweed is the herpes of the aquarium world. Once you've got it, you're stuck with it. But hey, it's great for nitrate control.

Auric wrote: Thu May 08, 2025 7:53 pm If you're lazy like me, float some Water Sprite. No planting needed, and it grows fast enough to shade the tank. Plus, my betta loves hiding in it.
True, but it can get out of hand if you don't trim it regularly. I had to cut mine back weekly in my 30-gallon.

Honestly, they're not picky. I've got mine in sand with basic tap water, pH around 7.0, and they're fine. Just avoid burying the rhizome, like NeoOn mentioned.

Java Fern is a no-brainer. I've got it in my 20-gallon with basic LED lighting, no CO2, and it's thriving. Just attach it to driftwood or rocks, and it'll do its thing. Even my cichlids don't mess with it.

Re: Feeling defeated and considering giving up

I can only imagine the frustration and despair you must be feeling right now. I'm going through a similar crisis with my tank, and I know how it feels to be at a complete loss. It's like watching everything you've worked so hard for unravel before your eyes. I'm sending you all the best of luck, and ...

Re: Java fern producing small brown offshoots: new plants or a cause for concern?

My tanks are pretty root-heavy, sand along the back and sides, with a bunch of different plants. I've got rocks, caves, ornaments, and wood in the middle, all with Java fern attached.

I like to replant the Java fern babies on different pieces of bog wood, caves, rocks, and so on. When I'm cleaning ...

I'm curious to know if there's a UK equivalent for the Liquinox chelated iron I've been using. Anyone have a go-to source across the pond?

Re: When is a garden too densely planted?

I've always leaned towards using plastic or ceramic caves over real rocks in my tanks, mainly because I don't want to sacrifice valuable swimming space. To me, it seems like the 20-gallon tank could still fit a few more plants, but the 3-gallon betta tank looks pretty full, if you ask me.

Not a fan of Salvinia, I've got plenty of Frogbit and Water Lettuce, they're doing the job for me.
