Re: tank cleaning routine for discus

Twice a week's solid, but stress could be from the sand. Fine sand traps debris, messes with water quality. Try vacuuming deeper during changes, and check nitrates before and after. My crew chills at 82, less fluctuation. Also, what's your flow like? Discus hate strong currents.

Agreed on flow ...

Slybird wrote: Tue Apr 29, 2025 12:10 am Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll cut back on feeding and test my tap water. Tank's been running for about 8 months, so it's not new. Gonna try adding some frogbit too.
Good call. Also, check your filter flow. If it's too low, debris can build up and cause spikes.

Re: ammonia spikes in discus tank fix

First, cut back on feeding. Bloodworms are messy, and overfeeding is a common cause. Try once a day, and see if the spikes stop. Also, check your filter media. If it's clogged, beneficial bacteria can't do their job. What's your nitrate level? High nitrates can hint at overstocking.

Are angel fish laying eggs, but both are females?

I've got a pair of angelfish, my son picked them out and we've got no intention of breeding them. They're different sizes, but that doesn't necessarily mean they're not the same age since we got them at the same time. The yellow one's larger and pretty laid-back, while the black striped one gets ...

Re: have you ever stopped to think about your tank?

I think your tank is looking great.

Adding some more plants in the back right corner could be nice, it might fill out that area a bit more.

But honestly, I think it's fine just the way it is.

Re: A question about color.

Astaxanthin is actually present in many commercial fish foods, particularly those high-end flowerhorn preparations. Asian breeders often use potent color enhancers and even hormones to achieve that vibrant color, which fades once the discus is no longer on that diet.

Re: 6ft Prostar rimless tank with sump- recommedation

A 6x2x2 tank is actually 180 gallons, not 240. The sump would make up the remaining 60 gallons for the total volume.

Re: Future Discus Setup

I think there's been some confusion about Purigen. It's great for removing tannins, but it won't do much for nitrates. If you want to keep those down, regular water changes are still your best bet. I've also heard that a good algae scrubber can help, but keep in mind it won ...
