information on the maroon clownfish

Post by Axiomix »

I've come across the maroon clownfish being described as 'very aggressive', but I'm having trouble understanding what that entails. Would they be aggressive enough to go after a Pterois antennata, for instance (FableRyde)?

the tank size is pretty crucial here - maroon clownfish can get quite territorial, especially in smaller tanks, they tend to be more aggressive

The term 'very aggressive' is more applicable to interactions with other clownfish. In my experience, I've had a maroon clownfish living harmoniously with a tang - they're actually great buddies.

I've seen many community tanks with maroons doing just fine. My local fish store has a particularly impressive setup - a 5-inch maroon in a 50-gallon tank with tangs, chromis, gobies, and more. Of course, there aren't any other clowns in the tank. This maroon is so old it's turned pitch black, and it's definitely not for sale. I wish my own maroon was that size.

It's worth noting that white stripe maroons are generally considered more aggressive than the gold stripe ones.

Maroons are definitely the most aggressive of the clownfish, I've seen some pretty feisty ones in my time.

No, they're not overly aggressive towards each other when paired. Should do fine for tankmates with a dwarf lion
