care for male auratus cichlid

Post by timbrs »

We had a 65 gallon tank and from day one my male auratus cichlid was the man, that's why we called him boss. I noticed his tail was chewed off a week ago, but he was still running the show. The local store said to keep the water clean and keep an eye on him, said it should grow back in a few weeks. But last night I saw him nose down in his spot, and when I took a closer look, his back fins were gone, only the front two were left. So I got a new little home for him, 2.5 gallons, and moved him in there, gave him some medicine. He's pretty beat up, but he's still eating and trying to move around. Has anyone else had this happen, and did the fins grow back? I really love this little guy and I want him to get better.

If the fins are completely gone, right to the body, I'm afraid they're gone for good. But if there's still a bit of fin left, they should regrow, just takes time. Now I'm curious, have you figured out who's been nipping at Boss's fins?
