plants that pair with swordtails

Post by Taleno »

I'm setting up a new tank for my swordtails and wanna know what plants work best with them. Heard they like some cover but also open space. Any suggestions?

Swordtails are pretty chill with most plants, but they do love Java Fern and Anubias. Those are easy to care for and give 'em some hiding spots. I've got mine in a 20-gallon with sand substrate and moderate lighting. They're thriving.

Java Fern and Anubias are solid choices, but if you want something faster-growing, try Hornwort or Water Wisteria. They're great for absorbing nitrates and providing cover. Just watch the Hornwort, it can get messy if you don't trim it regularly.

I've had good luck with Amazon Swords in my swordtail tank. They're big enough to give cover but don't take over the tank. My swordtails love swimming through the leaves. Just make sure you've got root tabs if you're using inert substrate.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Gonna try Java Fern and Amazon Swords first. Appreciate the help!

Yep, Amazon Swords are a classic. Just keep an eye on your lighting, they can get leggy if it's too low. I run mine at 6 hours a day with a Nicrew light, seems to work well.

If you're going for a more natural look, consider adding some floating plants like Frogbit or Salvinia. They diffuse the light and give the swordtails a more shaded area to chill. Plus, they help with water quality by soaking up excess nutrients.

Floating plants are a great idea. Just be ready to thin 'em out often, they grow like crazy. My swordtails love hanging out under the Frogbit roots.
