Jewels are laying eggs in my cichlid tank

Post by kluxe »

Hi guys,

I've got a 36-gallon freshwater tank with a pretty interesting mix of inhabitants. There are 3 jewel cichlids, about 3 inches long, 1 convict cichlid that's a bit over 2 inches, 2 dempseys that I recently added and are around 1.5 inches, 2 featherfin catfish, 2 peacock eels, and a 2-inch rubber lipped pleco. I also threw in 3 African dwarf frogs from another tank, which I wasn't sure would survive, but they're actually thriving.

So, two of my jewel cichlids have paired up and laid eggs all over the house decoration in the back corner of the tank. The chemistry in the tank has been pretty interesting since then. The pair has taken over the back corner, and the rest of the fish are stuck on the opposite side.

I attempted to move the pair and their eggs to the old small tank, but the decoration was too big. I tried to gently rub off as many eggs as I could into the new tank and added the parents. However, I quickly realized that was probably a bad idea and put the parents back in the main tank before they got too stressed.

The pair is back in control of the back corner. Now I'm wondering:

1. How long will it take for my pair to lay eggs again?
2. When they do lay eggs, should I try to transfer them again or just leave everything as is and see what happens?

Thanks!
