How to maintain a Betta tank on a budget

Post by Rhythm »

I've been keeping my betta in a 5-gallon tank with a sponge filter, but I'm looking for ways to cut costs without compromising their health. Any tips on affordable heaters, substrates, or food options?

For heaters, I'd recommend the 50W preset ones from brands like Aqueon or Tetra. They're reliable and usually under $20. Sand or pool filter sand is a cheap substrate option, just rinse it well. For food, try Hikari Betta Bio-Gold pellets, they're affordable and high quality.

Yep, seconding the sand suggestion. I use pool filter sand in all my tanks, and it's dirt cheap. Also, skip the fancy decor and go for driftwood or rocks you can find outside, just boil them first to sterilize.

How often do you guys do water changes with a budget setup? I'm trying to stretch my water conditioner since it's pricey.

Just be careful with rocks, some can alter water hardness. Test them with vinegar first to check for reactivity.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I'll try the pool filter sand and look into the preset heater.

For water changes, I do 25% weekly in my 5-gallon. It keeps the water stable without using too much conditioner. Seachem Prime is concentrated, so a little goes a long way.

I feed mine frozen bloodworms once a week as a treat, but mostly stick to pellets. They're cheaper in the long run and still keep my fish healthy.

Anyone have experience with DIY filters? I've seen some folks use sponge and PVC setups, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle.

DIY filters can work if you're careful with the setup. I've used a sponge filter with an air pump, and it's been running fine for months. Just make sure the flow isn't too strong for your betta.
