Bleached scoly corals

Post by kodarix8 »

I had a major mishap with Kent Tech M while battling bryopsis - I accidentally overdosed and my magnesium levels skyrocketed from 1400 to 1800ppm overnight. On the bright side, it's now in the effective range to kill bryopsis. However, my warpaint scoly's vibrant blue stripes have lost some of their intensity and appear a bit translucent. And get this - my green acan lord has lost its green hue, haha. Will they regain their color? I'm stuck at this magnesium level for two weeks before I can gradually bring it down, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I've seen corals lose color temporarily and then regain it, so just keep an eye on them. If they're still eating and looking meaty, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I went through something similar with my scollys and montipora, they bleached after I added Kent Tech M to tackle bryopsis. My magnesium level didn't exceed the usual 1350, though. The good news is the Tech M did its job and cleared out the bryopsis in about a week. Now, I'm seeing the color slowly return to my corals, but it's taking months. I also toned down the intensity of my LED lighting, which might be helping the color come back – that's my theory, at least.

Don't forget, regular feedings are key for scolys, keep that food coming.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. I've bumped up my feeding schedule to 3 times a week and toned down the lighting a notch. Fingers crossed the bryopsis stays under control, I'm gonna try to maintain this level for another week or so. What's weird is that only the blue color faded on my warpaint scoly, the red stripes are still as vibrant as ever. Can't wait to see it regain its former glory - I've gotta say, I'm really starting to love scolys now, they're becoming one of my favorite tank inhabitants.
