New fish for 20-gallon high tank
New fish for 20-gallon high tank
I'm setting up a 20-gallon high tank and want to add some new fish. What species would work best? I've got a sponge filter, sand substrate, and a few Java Ferns. Water params are stable, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate.

For a 20-gallon high, I'd recommend a small school of Neon Tetras or Ember Tetras. They're chill and won't mess with your plants. Just keep the temp around 78°F and do weekly 20% water changes. Avoid anything too big like Angelfish, they'll outgrow it fast.

I agree with reelexpert. Neon Tetras are a solid choice. You could also add a pair of Dwarf Gouramis if you want a centerpiece fish. Just make sure your tank is well-cycled before adding them. How long has it been running?

Thanks for the suggestions. The tank's been running for about 3 months now. I've got a heater set to 78°F and a LED light on for 8 hours a day. Would Cherry Shrimp work with the Tetras?

Cherry Shrimp should be fine with Neon Tetras, but keep an eye on them. Some Tetras might nip at the shrimp if they're hungry. Maybe start with a few and see how it goes. Also, consider adding some hiding spots like small caves or dense plants.

Yo, if you're gonna add shrimp, throw in some moss balls or Java Moss. They love that stuff. And yeah, Tetras are cool but don't overfeed or they'll get lazy and pick on the shrimp.
Re: New fish for 20-gallon high tank
I've had success with a mix of Neon Tetras and Pygmy Corydoras in my 20-gallon. The Corys help keep the substrate clean and they're super peaceful. Just make sure you've got enough hiding spots for everyone.

Man, I tried Cherry Shrimp once and my Tetras ate them all in like a day. Maybe I just got some aggressive ones, but it was a bummer. Stick to bigger shrimp like Amanos if you're worried.

That's a good point. Amanos are tougher and less likely to get eaten. They're also great at cleaning up algae.

If you're set on Cherry Shrimp, maybe introduce them before the Tetras. That way they can establish hiding spots. Also, feed the Tetras well so they're less likely to go after the shrimp. What's your feeding routine like?
