Culturing white worms
Culturing white worms
I'm thinking about culturing white worms for my discus tank. Anyone got tips on the best setup? I've got a 75 gallon with sand substrate, temp at 82F, and a canister filter. Wanna make sure I don't mess it up.

White worms are a solid choice for discus. You'll need a shallow container, like a plastic shoebox, with moist peat moss or coco coir. Keep it around 60-70F, they don't like it too warm. Feed them oatmeal or bread, but avoid mold. I've had success with a small air stone for humidity control.
Re: Culturing white worms
That sounds like a great idea! I've heard they're super nutritious for discus. Just make sure to keep the culture clean, maybe rinse the worms before feeding. You're gonna love how active your fish get with live food.
Re: Culturing white worms
I've tried culturing them before. They're kinda finicky with temperature. If it's too warm, they'll crash fast. Also, don't overfeed the culture, or it'll go sour. A little yeast or fish food works as feed too.
Re: Culturing white worms
How often do you harvest them? I've got a small tank and don't wanna overdo it.

Liber's right about the temp. I keep mine in the basement where it's cooler. Harvest every few days, just scoop a section to keep the culture going strong.

I've read they're high in protein. Do you guys think they're better than blackworms for discus?
Re: Culturing white worms
Thanks for the advice, everyone. Gonna start with a shoebox and coco coir, see how it goes. Appreciate the temp tips especially.
