best plants for a Shrimp tank

Post by photobug »

I'm setting up a new 10 gallon shrimp tank and want to know which plants are best for them. I've heard Java Moss is good, but what else works well with shrimp? I'm using a sponge filter and have Fluval Stratum as substrate. Lighting is moderate, about 6 hours a day.

Java Moss is solid, but you gotta try some Anubias or Bucephalandra too. They're chill and don't need much light. Shrimp love hiding in the leaves. I've got a 20 gallon with both, and my shrimp are always grazing on them. Also, floating plants like Frogbit help keep the water clean.

I'd add some Marimo Moss Balls to the list. They're low maintenance and shrimp seem to enjoy rolling them around. Plus, they help with water quality. My tank has a mix of Java Moss, Anubias, and Marimo, and the shrimp are thriving. What's your water temp? Shrimp prefer it around 72–78°F.

My shrimp tank has Hornwort and it's growing like crazy. The shrimp love it, and it's super easy to care for. Just toss it in and it'll do its thing. I don't even use CO2, and it's fine. Tank's at 75°F, sponge filter, and LED lights for 8 hours.

I second the Marimo Moss Balls. They're great for shrimp and look cool too. I've got a few in my 15 gallon, along with some Java Fern. Shrimp are always on them.

Yo, don't forget about Subwassertang! It's like Java Moss's cooler cousin. Shrimp go nuts for it, and it's easy to grow. I've got it in my 10 gallon with some Red Cherry Shrimp, and they're always hanging out in it. Tank's got a sponge filter and LED lights for 7 hours.

Thanks for the suggestions, everyone. I'll definitely try Java Moss, Anubias, and Marimo Moss Balls. My tank's at 76°F, so that should work. Any tips on how to attach the Anubias to driftwood?

Just use some fishing line or super glue gel. Tie or glue the rhizome to the driftwood, and it'll attach itself over time. Don't bury the rhizome in the substrate, though, or it'll rot. I've done this with all my Anubias, and they're doing great.

Yep, fishing line works best for me too. It's cheap and easy to remove once the plant's attached. I've also used cotton thread in a pinch, but it takes longer to break down. Just make sure the rhizome isn't buried, like dudekay said.

I've used super glue gel for all my Anubias, and it's been flawless. Just a tiny dab on the rhizome, press it to the driftwood for a few seconds, and you're done. The glue dries safe for the tank, and the plant starts attaching in a couple weeks.
