Salt use in aquariums: Clarifications
Salt use in aquariums: Clarifications
I've been seeing mixed opinions on using salt in freshwater tanks. Some say it's great for stress, others claim it harms plants. What's the real deal? My tank's a 20 gallon with Guppies, Java Fern, and Anubias. I do weekly 25% water changes, temp's at 78F.
Re: Salt use in aquariums: Clarifications
Salt can be useful but it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. For Guppies, a low dose (1 tsp per gallon) can help with stress and minor infections. However, Java Fern and Anubias are sensitive to salt. If you must use it, keep it short-term and monitor your plants for melting.
Re: Salt use in aquariums: Clarifications
I agree with duneshell. Salt's a tool, not a cure-all. I've used it in my 30 gallon with Mollies, but even they can tolerate it better than most plants. Maybe try a quarantine tank for salt treatments if your main tank has sensitive plants.
Re: Salt use in aquariums: Clarifications
Spot on. Also, remember to dissolve the salt in water before adding it to the tank. Dumping it straight in can cause burns.duneshell wrote: ↑Tue May 20, 2025 3:08 am Salt can be useful but it's not a one-size-fits-all solution. Re: Salt use in aquariums: Clarifications
Salt? More like 'nah' unless you're running a marine tank. Freshwater fish didn't evolve to swim in brine, and your plants will throw a fit. But hey, if you're into crispy leaves and stressed fish, go for it.
Re: Salt use in aquariums: Clarifications
It's all about balance. I've used salt in my 40 gallon with no issues, but I've got hardier plants like Amazon Swords. For your setup, maybe skip the salt unless there's a specific issue. Regular water changes and stable params are usually enough.
Re: Salt use in aquariums: Clarifications
Salt's sketchy, man. My buddy tried it in his 10 gallon and his Neon Tetras didn't take it well. Stick to the basics unless you've got a real problem.
Re: Salt use in aquariums: Clarifications
Exactly. Context matters. If you're dealing with Ich or something similar, salt can be a lifesaver. Otherwise, it's often unnecessary.
Re: Salt use in aquariums: Clarifications
I've had good results with salt in quarantine tanks, but never in my main setup. Too many variables with plants and sensitive fish. Maybe consider a separate tank for treatments if you're set on using salt.
Re: Salt use in aquariums: Clarifications
Thanks for the advice, everyone. I'll skip the salt for now and keep an eye on my plants and fish. Appreciate the help!
