minimum tank size for corals

Post by reef_runner »

What's the smallest tank you'd recommend for keeping corals? I've got a 10 gallon but worried it's too small for anything beyond softies. Lighting is a basic LED, no skimmer, weekly 20% water changes.

A 10 gallon can work for soft corals and some LPS like Zoanthids or Mushrooms. Just keep params stable, especially calcium and alkalinity. I'd avoid SPS unless you're running a high-end light and dosing.

Yo, I've got a 5 gallon pico with some GSP and it's vibing. Just gotta stay on top of water changes, like 10% twice a week. Don't overfeed or it'll get sketchy fast.

Tank size isn't the only factor. Flow and lighting matter more for coral health. In a 10 gallon, aim for 20-30x turnover and at least 100 PAR at the substrate. Test magnesium regularly if keeping LPS.

That's impressive! How long have you had the GSP in there?

I've kept Acans and Duncanopsammia in a 10 gallon for over a year. Key is consistency: same salt mix, same water change schedule, and don't mess with the scape too much. They thrive on routine.

Soft corals are your best bet in a small tank. Xenia, Kenya Tree, and Leathers are forgiving. Just watch for allelopathy—some release toxins that can mess with other corals if the tank's too cramped.

small tanks need more attention, but they're doable. i'd skip the fancy stuff and stick to hardy softies. less headache, more chill.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Think I'll start with some Zoas and see how they do before trying anything more demanding.

Smart move. Zoas are a great indicator—if they're happy, your tank's probably stable enough for other LPS.
