is a 20g tank suitable for a sorority?

Post by silvana »

I've got a 20g high tank that's about 8 months old and I'm relocating the current inhabitants to my 55g community tank. Now I'm trying to decide what to do with this one. Would this work for a sorority tank? If so, how many would you recommend? Would you add any other fish or just betta girls?

If this isn't a good fit for a sorority, do you have any alternative ideas?

Honestly, I think this setup wouldn't be ideal for a sorority. The main issue is the lack of plants to break the line of sight. You'd want a lot of tall and floating plants to minimize aggression between the females. These plants would serve as visual barriers, preventing the females from constantly seeing each other, and provide plenty of hiding spots for them to escape any conflicts. To increase the chances of success, you'd also want to get females from the same spawn. However, even with these precautions, female bettas can still be quite aggressive, and sometimes they just 'snap'. I'd personally rather avoid the potential headache of managing a sorority, especially if you don't have backup tanks for any bullies that might need to be removed.

Thanks for the honest feedback. I think I was getting a bit ahead of myself with the sorority idea. I'll look into stocking this tank with something else for now and maybe revisit the idea later when I can set up a bigger, more suitable environment. Appreciate your time and advice.
