calling the salty side

Post by starwave »

I'm getting back into marine, years after having a small tank with a cool frog fish. Recently picked up a 6x1.5x1.5 tank with a sump, was used for a reef setup.

Looking to get another frog fish if I can find one, haven't seen any for sale in ages. Also keen on a trigger fish, maybe a panther grouper, and a box or cow fish. Possibly a tang too.

My main question is, would these guys be alright together in the same tank? Any advice would be great, cheers.

I've heard frog fish can be a handful in community tanks, they're often kept solo for a reason. Getting hold of one's tough enough, but feeding them's a whole different story.

A frog fish is one of those fish that's better off on its own, in my opinion. Ben's right, they do well in nano tanks and can be a real challenge to keep. If you're set on having one, you could consider modifying your sump to create a separate, smaller tank underneath the main one.

If you're looking to get one from Maidenhead Aquatics, I think they're on the banned list, or at least, they're not commonly stocked due to potential system risks if one dies. That being said, I've found that if you ask nicely and demonstrate suitable knowledge and a suitable aquarium, they're more than likely to order one in for you. I've personally seen both seven-flake species of frog fish and cow fish at TMC in Chorley Wood - and I must say, it's one of the best places around.

I've had no issues sourcing the other fish, it's just the frog fish that's proving elusive. To be honest, I'm not convinced it'd be a good mix with the others anyway.

Southwest Marine isn't too far from you in Somerset, I've seen frog fish there in the past, they're a helpful bunch and I'm sure they'll be able to get what you need.
