Malawi cichlid feeding questions
Malawi cichlid feeding questions
Just got a group of Malawi cichlids and wanna make sure I'm feeding them right. Heard they need a mix of veg and protein, but not sure about the ratios. What's the best combo for these guys?
Re: Malawi cichlid feeding questions
Malawi cichlids thrive on a balanced diet. I'd recommend 60% spirulina-based flakes or pellets, 30% protein like brine shrimp or bloodworms, and 10% blanched veggies like zucchini. Keep an eye on their aggression during feeding, it can get messy.

I've had mine for a year now, and they're doing great with a mix of Hikari Cichlid Gold and occasional frozen krill. They go nuts for the krill, but I only give it twice a week to avoid bloating.

Agree with FinGuru on the spirulina. It's key for their digestion. I also add a pinch of crushed nori sheets once a week. They seem to love it, and it keeps their colors vibrant.

Aw, I remember when I first got mine! They were so shy. Just take it slow with new foods. Maybe start with the spirulina flakes and gradually introduce the protein. They'll adjust.

Thanks for the tips, everyone. Gonna try the spirulina flakes and see how they react.

Yo, don't sleep on the veggie side. Mine straight up ignore the protein if I don't mix it right. Gotta keep it varied or they'll pick at each other.

Re: Malawi cichlid feeding questions
I've noticed mine do better with smaller, more frequent feedings. Three times a day, but tiny amounts. Less waste, less aggression.

Anyone tried homemade cichlid food? I've been blending spinach, shrimp, and garlic, then freezing it in cubes. Works like a charm and saves cash.
Re: Malawi cichlid feeding questions
Lol, my cichlids would rather starve than eat veggies. Drama queens. But hey, at least they're entertaining.
