Why are my crypts not growing?

Post by reelmaster_88 »

My Cryptocoryne plants have been in my tank for about two months now, and they're not growing at all. I've got a 20-gallon tank with a Fluval Aquasky light, running for 8 hours a day. Substrate is Seachem Flourite, and I dose Easy Green once a week. Water params are good, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 10 nitrate. Any ideas what's up?

Crypts can be super finicky, dude. Sometimes they just melt and take forever to bounce back. What's your water temp? They like it warm, around 78–82°F. Also, how's your flow? Too much current can stress 'em out.

Crypt melt is common when they're adjusting to new water conditions. Even if your params are stable, they might still be acclimating. How often are you doing water changes? Big swings can trigger melt. Also, what's your KH and GH? Crypts prefer softer water.

I had the same issue with my Cryptocoryne Wendtii. Turns out, my light was too intense. I dimmed it a bit, and they started growing like crazy. Maybe try reducing your light intensity or duration?

Thanks for the tips, everyone. I'll try adjusting the light and check my KH and GH. My temp is at 76°F, so I'll bump it up a bit. Appreciate the help!

Yep, crypts are drama queens. They'll melt just 'cause they feel like it. Give 'em time, keep things steady, and they'll come back.

Crypts are slow growers, especially if they're still establishing their root systems. Are you using root tabs? Flourite has nutrients, but they might need a boost. Also, avoid disturbing the substrate too much.

I've found that Crypts do better in tanks with lower light and minimal water changes. Too much tinkering can stress them out. Maybe cut back on the water changes to once every two weeks and see if that helps.

Crypts are weird, man. Sometimes they thrive in terrible conditions, other times they melt in perfect setups. How's your CO2? If you're not running any, they might just be slow. But if you are, maybe dial it back a bit.

Crypts are heavy root feeders. If you're not using root tabs, they might be starving. Also, check for any pests like snails or shrimp that might be nibbling on them.
