Goniopora troubleshooting assistance needed

Post by Duskfire »

Need some advice. I've got a red goni frag that's been thriving in my tank for over a month - went from 6 heads to 25. Then I did a 3-day lights-out to tackle some GHA, and everything's bounced back except the goni.

Turned the lights back on 3 days ago, and it was partially open that first evening, but it hasn't opened since. Everything else in the mixed reef is doing great - sps, lps, mushrooms, and my clam all look healthy. I've checked the levels: sg 1.025, temp 81, alk 8.4, calcium 400, mag 1200, nitrates 2, phos 0.4.

The only other change I made recently was switching to phosban in my reactor to get my phosphates under control. I used half the recommended amount, and after 4 days, my phosphates have dropped to 0.04. This is a 90-gallon reef with plenty of flow from my MP40 and MP10.

Everything was growing great before the lights-out, and now everything except the goni is thriving. I'm planning a water change later today, but I'm not sure what I'm trying to fix. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Gonis can be a bit finicky at times, and to be honest, I've had similar experiences with mine. I've got a dozen of them, and one that I've had for two years actually closed up to just its skeleton for almost two months - it was a real concern. But, I didn't make any changes and it's now huge and flourishing again. I'm not sure what triggered the change, but it's back to normal. Good luck with yours.

Thanks for the reassurance, I guess I'll just have to be patient and see how it goes. Those corals can be pretty finicky, I swear.
