I've been out of the hobby for a bit, and my community tank's been struggling as a result. Come the end of the year, I'm planning on stripping it back and starting fresh. Old world cichlids have caught my eye, but I'm a complete newbie when it comes to them - any advice on stocking my tank would be much appreciated. The tank's 4ft, 240L, which I know limits my options. The water's around pH 8, but I'm fuzzy on the hardness.
I've always been fond of Malawis, Tangs, and shellies. Colour's a plus, but not essential.

Re: preparing for a new journey
I'm torn between Haps and Peacocks, to be honest. A Tanganyikan setup could work beautifully, though. Neolamprologus are great options for a smaller tank, and a big colony of shell dwellers would be stunning.
Re: preparing for a new journey
They all have their charm, I think. The Neolamprologus do catch my eye, but I'm not sure if my tank's big enough for them. I'd love to know if it's feasible to keep a few in my 4ft tank, and if I'd have to stick to one species or if I could mix and match.
A big colony of shell dwellers is also really tempting, but at the moment, I'm leaning more towards the Neolamprologus.

Re: preparing for a new journey
Neolamprologus is actually the genus of those beautiful shell dwellers you were mentioning, so it seems like we're on the same page with that.
