Finding the right rocks

Post by florax »

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of adding some large rocks to my 10 gallon Betta tank and I'm looking for some advice. I've read that certain stones can be too rough and cause damage to the Betta's fins, which I definitely want to avoid.

Can anyone recommend a dark rock, preferably black or grey, that won't affect my water quality? I'd really appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

Have you checked with your local fish store for some suggestions? They might carry or be able to order some smooth rocks suitable for your Betta tank. I've found that smooth rocks are generally the way to go, as they're less likely to cause damage to your Betta's fins.

As for the type of rocks you're looking for, I came across these on eBay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/Houston-Ma...8 ... SwDtpZbBKf. They seem to fit your description of dark-colored rocks, but I'd recommend double-checking their composition to ensure they won't affect your water quality.

Hi, thanks for the response, I appreciate it.

I actually did check my LFS, but they never seem to have a good selection of rocks like these.

I was looking at something similar to what you posted - those Houston Matrix rocks look great, would they be okay for my tank?

What's the type of rock according to the listing?

I found this Aquarium Decoration Rock Fish Tank Natuflake Stone DARK GREY, it says it's 100% natural which sounds good for my tank. It's usually used for cichlids but I think it could work for my Betta. It stabilises pH and hardens the water, so that's a plus.

I'm also looking at Seiryu Stone, would that be a good option?

Those rocks would raise your water hardness, not ideal for a Betta tank. I'd recommend looking for a different type.

Seiryu Stone is a good option, it's usually safe for Bettas and comes in dark colors.
