Unusual growth on hammer coral skeleton

Post by Riveno9 »

I'm not a fan of sharing my tank issues, but I've got a problem that's stumped me, and I'm hoping someone can offer some insight. My hammer coral, which I've had for over three weeks now, has been closed up for two days, and I'm worried. It seemed to be doing great initially, but now I'm not so sure.

The only recent change to my tank was adding a candy cane coral on the opposite side on Saturday, but that's about it - no other changes in over a week and a half. Today, I noticed some weird growths on the base of my hammer coral. One looks like it's developing roots, while the other resembles dust bunnies - not exactly what I want to see.

I'm hoping someone can help me identify these growths and figure out if they're causing my coral to close up. It's only affecting the side of the coral that's facing away from the light, which is my Kessil, centered over the tank. My hammer coral is on the left side, so it's not getting direct light.

Here are my current parameters:

- Salinity: 1.026 (using a refractometer)
- Ammonia: 0
- Nitrate: 0
- Phosphate: I still need to get a test kit for this, but I'm guessing this might be the culprit
- KH: 9 (measured on Saturday)
- CA: 400 (measured on Saturday)
- MG: 1400 (measured on Saturday)
- pH: 8-8.1
- Temperature: 76.5-78.5

The only algae I've got is a tiny spot of cyano, which isn't too concerning, but I'd love to get some advice on these growths and my coral's behavior.

I'm going to take a guess here, but could those growths be bryozoans?

I just got home from work when I wrote this, it's a frogspawn haha. I'm still trying to figure out why I said hammer, guess I was brain dead.

As for the bryozoans, I've been looking into them but can't seem to find much. Are they beneficial or something I should be worried about? I'm more concerned if they're the reason my frogspawn closed up - is it possible they're irritating it?
