kerb has been protective

Post by sunnya_1 »

My male kerb's really protective of my castle, won't let any other fish swim by without chasing them off, while the female stays inside. I've never seen this behaviour before, is it due to breeding or is there something else at play here?

Anyone else have a kerb like this, super protective of their castle?

Sounds like your kerbs are gettin' ready to spawn, that's why the male's bein' so protective of the castle, keepin' other fish at bay.

Sounds like breeding behaviour to me too, that's what I was thinking but I've never seen it before so wasn't sure if it was just my male kerb being a bit territorial or not.

yes definitely 100% breeding. I had a similar experience with a pair in my tank, it's huge with over 25 fish, but the male krib took charge, bullying everything and claiming half the tank as his own. I ended up having to rehome the female and since then the male has calmed down - unfortunately all the eggs got eaten. another issue with baby kribs is when they reach a certain size, they start fighting over partners, not a great situation.

You've already started a thread on this yesterday, do we really need another one?

Also, this is an Old World cichlid question - I moved your last post to the right section, btw.

I didn't get any response over there, so I thought I'd try here and looks like I got a response this time.

Just give people a bit more time to respond, topic's only a day old. Posting in the right sub-forums is usually the way to go, you'll get more accurate advice and help build those sections up, more activity in them means better and faster responses.
