keeping three stripe damselfish

Post by _frostbite »

I've heard these fish can get pretty aggressive when they're alone in the tank, so I figured they're schooling fish. I was thinking of getting three of them. I'm concerned they might pick on my other fish, though - I've got a Coflake Beauty and a Sixline in there already.

Three Stripes are pretty feisty, one of the more aggressive striped damsel species. What's your tank size, by the way? I'm guessing they'll bully your Wrasse, setting up their territory and defending it constantly. If your angel tries to graze in that area, it'll probably get nipped at and chased. If there's no room to avoid them, your angel will likely get stressed. Have you considered just getting a single Four Stripe instead? Young ones are a better bet, they're less aggressive for sure.

I'm leaning towards the 4 stripe now too. If I get a young one, would that really make a difference in its aggression level?

Young four stripes are generally pretty docile, but as they mature, there's a chance they could become more territorial and aggressive towards your other fish.

I'm thinking of getting Chromis instead, they seem like a safer bet for my tank with the Coflake Beauty and Sixline.

Chromis are a much better idea. They're generally pretty peaceful and school in groups, which adds to their visual appeal. They're also less likely to bully your other fish, like the Coflake Beauty and the Sixline.

I'm looking for some recommendations on Chromis. What type would you guys suggest I get?

A school of green chromis is ideal, they're generally pretty calm and peaceful, would work well with your existing fish.

Can someone remind me, what's the minimum number for a shoal of chromis?

I'm thinking 6 is a good amount for a shoal, I started with that many and it worked out well for me. I had 6 small ones to begin with and even after 3 years, I've still got 4 of them going strong.
