choosing the right aquarium underlayment and fishless cycle advice

Post by Awake »

Hey all,
I've been running my community aquarium for a couple of months now, and it's been a pleasant surprise - just one water change so far. I know live plants are a big help, but I'm still a bit skeptical, even with all the tests looking good. I've only got 2 dwarf gouramis and 4 mollies in there at the moment, but I thought I'd need to do water changes every 2 weeks or so.

I've got a couple of questions about my new 50G tank. I've picked up some AVA foam floor mats - 10mm thick, and I was thinking of doubling them up to 20mm. Would that be okay, or should I look for something else?

Also, I'm planning on using this tank as a quarantine tank initially, before moving to a single species setup. Is it worth adding sand, driftwood, and plants now, or should I wait? What are the pros and cons of doing it now versus later?
