Choosing the right fish for your tank

I've got a thirty gallon tank that's been up and running for a while, and I'm in the process of restocking it. The general hardness is around 120, if that's relevant. I've also got a few plants in there - mostly java ferns and some other easy-to-grow stuff.

As for the current inhabitants, I've got one bristlenose pleco, a single dwarf gourami, and four gold barbs. Now, I'm about to take in a glofish tetra - not really my thing, but it needs a new home. From what I've read, glofish tetras are essentially genetically modified black skirt tetras that prefer to be in a group. Would it be a good idea to get a few more to keep it company?

Also, I'm wondering if four gold barbs is enough - I know they like to be in groups too. And after adding the glofish tetra, would I still have room for any other fish in the tank?

You're correct that the typical Glofish tetras are actually modified black skirt tetras. Nowadays, you can also find Glo X-ray tetras, which are often referred to as Pristellas. I've heard these fish can be a bit nippy, so it's generally recommended to keep them in a larger group to minimize any potential aggression. In theory, they should get along fine with non-Glo versions of skirt tetras, both black and white.

Honestly, I'm not a fan of GMO fish, so if I were in your shoes, I'd consider passing on the glo tetra. Instead, I'd focus on adding a few more gold barbs to your school - they do seem to thrive in smaller groups, but having more companions will undoubtedly make them happier.
