Keeping polypterus in a mbuna tank

Post by flameon9 »

Hi all,

I'm in the process of a major tank overhaul, swapping out my American cichlids for marine fish. I had a 6x2x2 tank for them, but sold a few, then got a temporary 5ft tank, and eventually sold that one too and replaced it with a 6ft reef tank.

We've now sold most of the American cichlids, and we're left with a Para Pleco and a few Polypterus. I'm considering keeping the Polypterus, as I've almost finished rehoming the American cichlids, and I'm thinking of getting some African cichlids to keep with them in the 5ft tank.

Given our extremely hard water, I think the African cichlids would thrive in our conditions. The Polypterus are pretty large, so they'd likely eat baby Mbuna - which is why I'd plan to raise the juveniles in a smaller tank until they're big enough to join the Polypterus.

I'm curious to know, before I do more research, if it's okay to keep Polypterus with Mbuna. I'm particularly fond of the Alunocara species.
