A brown spot on my clown costume

Post by angler_xp »

I just set up my 12g reef and got my pair of clowns in - after a 2-week qt, I was excited to see them swim around. But, nope, I notice this brown spot on the female. I mean, at least they're the first ones in, but what is this thing?! I've been searching online, but can't find anything, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out.

Thanks for the assist!

Not the best view from the pics, but I'll give it a shot. If the spot is level with the skin, it could be a scrape or just an odd color you didn't catch before. Maybe it's just some debris stuck in the slime coat. On the other hand, if it's raised, there's a possibility it's a parasitic flatworm that shows up as dark spots - some people call it black spot or black ich.

Thanks for breaking it down for me. I'm hoping it's just a scrape or something simple. The brown spot is pretty noticeable, and I'm certain it's not black. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out what it could be. A parasite is the last thing I want to deal with. As for the other clown, I'm pretty sure it's just a scrape on its chin - it's more of a bloody/flesh color. I'm stumped because they've been in qt the whole time, and they're the first ones in that tank. Would a natural ick treatment have taken care of the flatworm if that's what it is?

Larger images would be beneficial, but based on what I can see, I'm inclined to think it might be a missing scale. The appearance doesn't seem to indicate a disease or external parasite. If your main tank is currently fishless, I'd suggest introducing the two clowns and closely monitoring their condition. Should their situation deteriorate, please provide additional photos for further assessment.
