My beautiful purple betta's color has been fading, and he's developed fin rot and trouble swimming up for food. We've tried baths, Kanaplex, and Prazipro over time, but a very experienced fish friend helped me realize he's just aging. The fading started about 2 months ago, and the other issues have developed over the last few weeks. He spends most of his day on his hammock, but still manages to catch a few pellets or blood worms at each meal. One eye seems to be developing a cataract. I've been giving him vitamins. I've only had him 4 months, but it's clear I was sold an old fish.
The real question is, how long can he keep going like this? I don't think he's suffering yet, but I don't want him to either. I've euthanized neons with clove oil before, but I wasn't as attached to them. Should I let him keep fighting for as long as he wants? I love him and don't want to euthanize him until it's really time.

When you feel it's time, that's when you'll know it's right to euthanize him. Adding some extra top cover or a shallower container might make him more comfortable for now, give him a bit more control over his environment.
