setting up a new configuration
setting up a new configuration
Just made the switch to FOWLR today, sold off all my corals and fish, and picked up a couple new additions - a small Diodon holocanthus (spiny puffer) and a picaso trigger fish. They're currently in a 55g since they're still small, but I'll be upgrading to a 120g in about 6 months. Looking for some ideas on tankmates when I make the move - was thinking maybe an eel for the bottom, any suggestions? Anything else you'd recommend adding to the mix? Tank's still a bit cloudy from all the sand I kicked up, so pics will have to wait till it clears up.
Re: setting up a new configuration
Just a quick update, got a couple of pics of the new additions while they're settling in.
Re: setting up a new configuration
Those puffer and trigger are real nice additions, and that last pic of them is just too cute. I'm curious, would lyretail wrasse or clown triggerfish make good tankmates for them, or would that be a bad mix?

Sweet porcupine
Yeah, a snowflake eel could work out pretty well. Foxface is another option that might be worth a shot.

Re: setting up a new configuration
I've had great success keeping my trigger with morays, specifically the Echidna and Gymnomuraena species. Some Gymnothorax can also work, but be mindful of their size and stick to feeding them dead foods. Your puffer is a great choice, by the way - those diodonts are adorable. Don't forget that even with a FOWLR setup, coflakes can still be a viable option, and a few large snails will go a long way in keeping algae under control.
Re: setting up a new configuration
I still think soft coflakes could work with your puffer, they're pretty chill. That little guy is seriously adorable, I'm super jealous of your new additions!
Re: setting up a new configuration
I've always thought coflakes weren't reef safe, or is that just they'll eat inverts. The puffer eating large snails is a concern for me too. I do like the look of jubo hermits though, they're a nice option.

Check out zenoxa's pinned thread, I believe it's in his sig, or just click this link.
Re: setting up a new configuration
I still wouldn't trust the trigger around coflakes. I mean, the puffer's gonna see those snails as food, right?
Re: setting up a new configuration
Your puffer and trigger should be okay with large snails, especially if you keep them well fed. I mean, they might not bother them at all. The trigger may try to gnaw on some hard coflakes, though.
