Growing christmas moss: tips and advice

Post by nEmo95 »

Just got my Christmas Moss in the mail and I'm kinda stuck on what to do with it.

Been reading up on it and I'm seeing mixed advice - some folks say just float it, while others are saying to attach it to ornaments or whatever with some fish wire.

So, what's the best way to go - just let it float or attach it to something?

Attach it to hardscapes, I use super glue gel or fishing line, seems to work pretty well for me.

I'd start by trimming off the dead bits, then you can attach it to whatever you like - driftwood, decor, doesn't matter. Superglue, fishing line or thread will all work, personally I think black marine-grade thread is the way to go.

Enjoy!

(Here's how I did it with java moss in my 29g, just for reference - Christmas moss is pretty similar)

I'm a fan of attaching it, looks way better that way. Christmas moss is really pretty stuff, I love it.

I'm clearly not cut out for this. No wire on hand, so I figured I'd just float the Christmas moss for the time being. That was a disaster – it just disintegrated and made a mess. I've managed to remove most of it, but now I'm left with all these tiny bits floating around, which means another tank change is in order.

That can happen, especially when you're dealing with delicate stuff like Christmas moss. Try gently gathering it in your hands first, don't squeeze too hard, just enough to clump it together a bit. If it's still falling apart, superglue is your best bet. Remove the decor from the water, then carefully attach the moss using superglue, that way you can avoid making a mess in the tank.

I've got a solution for you. When I attach Christmas moss, I find super glue works best. Remove the decor from the water first, then glue the moss on. It's a lot less hassle than trying to get it to stick with fishing line or thread.

Are you serious, superglue?

I'm a total mess when it comes to attaching moss. I'm the one who's too afraid to use superglue in her tank, always fumbling with thread, and paranoid about rusting bread ties. I end up wasting my money on moss because I just can't seem to get it attached to anything.

The proper stuff is aquarium safe, I've been told. Won't touch a cheap, unknown brand, no idea what's in it. But the real deal, it's fine. Cures on contact with water and was meant to keep wounds closed, after all. I'm useless at tying plants on, so glue's my go-to.
