Determining the sex of my kribensis
Determining the sex of my kribensis
I've got just the one krib at the moment, my LFS only had a single one in stock and they weren't sure what sex it was, but I decided to take a chance and get it anyway. I've been eyeing another krib at the LFS that I think could make a good pair, but the problem is I've no idea if it's male or female either. It's got a rounded belly and fins, which makes me think it's a female, but then again it's got colour running along its dorsal fin, which is throwing me off - any help would be great, this one's about 2 months old.
Re: Determining the sex of my kribensis
I'm having a bit of trouble with uploading a picture, does anyone know how to do it, I went to attachments, chose the file, picked the picture I wanted but it's not showing up.
Re: Determining the sex of my kribensis
You can use a site like photobucket, upload the pic there and then just copy and paste the img link into your post, that's what I do anyway.
Re: Determining the sex of my kribensis
I'm no expert, but I've had a few kribs before, and I think I can help you out.
First off, good on you for getting the one krib, even if the LFS wasn't sure about the sex. Now, you want to get another one and pair them up, but you're not sure if it's a female or male. I'd say go for it, but make sure you've got a big enough tank, and plenty of hiding places.
About the new krib you've seen, you're right, a rounded belly and fins usually mean it's a female. But, the colour on the dorsal fin is throwing you off, right? That can be a bit tricky to sex, but I'd still say it's probably a female.
Just to be safe, why don't you ask the LFS if they can sex it for you, or if they've got any other kribs you can get instead? And, just out of curiosity, what's the tank size and water parameters like for your current krib?

Re: Determining the sex of my kribensis
"Alright, thanks drift42, so I've got the pic on photobucket, now I just need to copy the link and paste it here, fingers crossed it works lol.
So, back to my kribs, I'm pretty sure the one I want to get is a female, the belly's all rounded and the fins are too, but like I said, there's colour on the dorsal fin, not sure what that means.
Anyone know if it's possible for a female to have colour on the dorsal fin? I really want to get another krib and I think they'd make a great pair, just need to figure out the sex first"

Re: Determining the sex of my kribensis
Thanks for the help drift42, I'll give that a go. I've got a photobucket account so that should work, I'll get the picture up and running.
Also, thanks kaido9, so you think its a female then? I was thinking that too with the rounded belly and fins, but wasn't sure with the colour on the dorsal fin.

Re: Determining the sex of my kribensis
yeah, i'm pretty sure its a female now, thanks for the confirmation, the rounded belly and fins are a dead giveaway
Re: Determining the sex of my kribensis
