Floating plants for a 29-gallon tank

Post by florapix »

I'm looking to expand my floating plant collection for my 29-gallon tank. Currently, I've got water sprite and a few mystery plants from my local fish store. I'll post some pics of the unknown ones tomorrow.

I've come across water lettuce as a popular option, but I'm unsure if it's suitable for a 29-gallon tank with a lid. Is it more geared towards pond use?

I'd advise against adding more floating plants, the Water Sprite you already have will likely take over the tank. From what I've read, Water Lettuce isn't ideal for a 29-gallon with a lid, it tends to rot under coverglass and requires really bright light, which might be a challenge in a smaller tank.

Thanks for the input. I actually plan on relocating the Water Sprite to my 10 gallon Betta tank, so I'm looking for alternatives for my 29 gallon. I'm thinking about trying Red Root Floaters or something a bit more unique - any other suggestions would be great.

I've got a bunch of red root floaters in Oklahoma that I'm looking to rehome - hate to toss 'em when someone might actually want 'em.

Those red root floaters are stunning. I'm so jealous, I wish I was closer. I'd definitely take some off your hands. The eBay prices are crazy - I saw one listing for $25 plus $8 shipping for just 6 individual plants.

I got mine for free too, I feel you. I'd rather give them to someone who'll appreciate them than sell them, they're just too cool.

I've actually thought about setting up a separate goldfish tank just for the excess plants from my main tank, so nothing goes to waste - it seems like a great way to utilize them.
