Floating plants: care and maintenance questions
Floating plants: care and maintenance questions
I'm looking to add some floating plants to my planted aquarium, but I'm not sure where to start. I'd love to hear some recommendations from you all. I've checked out my local fish store, and they have some frog bit, but it's sold with duckweed - which I'm really not interested in. Are there any good online retailers in the US that I can check out for a wider selection?
Re: Floating plants: care and maintenance questions
I'd suggest Water Wisteria or Water Sprite, both are decent options for floating plants and can thrive when partially submerged or planted in the substrate.
Re: Floating plants: care and maintenance questions
Floating plants like Cabomba or Ambulia can be a good choice.

I'd recommend Red Root Floater, it's a true floater.

Some other options you can try are Hygrophila, Ludwigia, Bacopa, Hydrilla and Elodia. Normally, they're planted in the gravel, but they can grow across the surface too.

I had no idea many of the plants I see rooted could also do well floating, really appreciate the suggestions, opens up a lot more possibilities for me.
Re: Floating plants: care and maintenance questions
I'd still recommend tropical Frogbit, even with the duckweed. It's a fantastic surface plant and controlling the duckweed isn't as difficult as it seems. I've removed it from my tanks before by simply netting out the few plants that appear during my weekly water change.
Water Sprite is probably the top choice for a floater, if you can find it. I'm not familiar with plant suppliers in the US, though.

I ended up striking out online for most floating plants, couldn't find any frogbit to save my life. Ordered some red root floater as a temporary fix. I'll have to wait until I'm back near my local fish store to grab some frogbit, duckweed and all.boomer wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 4:55 pm I'd still recommend tropical Frogbit, even with the duckweed.
