Why is my ludwigia repens turning brown?

Post by Dolphin »

Not sure if I'm in the right place with this, but figured I'd give it a shot. My plants, specifically the Ludwigia repens, have started going brown and getting holes - is there anything I can do to help it out? The water wisteria is doing fine, which is weird. I did trim the Ludwigia a couple of weeks ago and replanted the tops, someone on Facebook told me to do that, and it's been downhill since. I'm dosing 5ml of Seachem Flourish every week, so I'm not sure what's going on.

Check the stems, are they still hard or have they gone soft and mushy? If they're soft and squishy, it's likely the plants are dead and rotting away.

When taking cuttings, a clean, sharp pair of scissors is essential to cut through the stem cleanly. Plant the cuttings in a hole in the substrate, being careful not to damage the base of the stem where it was cut. If you damage this area, the cutting will likely rot and die.

If the stems are still firm but the leaves are dropping off, give it a couple of weeks to see if it recovers. Adding an iron-based liquid plant fertiliser might help, but other plant foods probably won't make a difference.

It seems like a light/nutrient balance issue is at play here. Without more information on your lighting setup or any additional plant supplements you might be using, it's challenging to pinpoint the exact cause. You mentioned the plant was thriving beforehand, so can you tell me more about that? How long was it doing well? If that's the case, it's likely that something has changed in your water parameters.

I'm not saying these are definitely the culprits, but I've had similar issues in the past when I added iron to my tank. I've also seen it happen when the water authority changed their treatment process, which in turn affected my water's pH levels.
