Do chilli rasboras eat their own fry?

Post by finner »

Was just thinking about this - do chilli rasboras see other fish's fry as food?

If your rasboras are well-fed, they might not bother with the fry, but if they're hungry, they'll likely see them as a snack.

Most fish, including chilli rasboras, tend to be opportunistic when it comes to eggs - if they stumble upon them, they'll likely eat them. The eggs, after being laid, are pretty conspicuous to all fish, whereas the fry themselves have a better shot at survival since they can hide under various objects like wood or leaves. The spawning fish give off pheromones and allomones, essentially broadcasting what's happening to all the other fish in the vicinity.

Thanks for the info. I just found the fry after removing the adults from the tank, they weren't spawned in there.
