Getting started with bettas

Post by willie32 »

Just getting into Bettas for the first time, never really had an interest before but I'm hooked now.

Considering setting up a female sorority tank in my 26 gallon, and having a single male in my 8 gallon.

What are people's experiences with sorority tanks - any tips to share? Would it work in my tank, do you think?

Also, if I did go for a sorority tank, would I be able to keep a small school of rasboras with them - maybe 10-12 galaxy rasboras?

@roygun_1's got a female sorority tank, I'm curious what his experience is like with it. Would love to hear any tips or advice he might have, especially since I'm thinking of setting one up in my 26 gallon.

I've come across another sorority tank - @Deanasue's is another one of them, actually.

I had a sorority tank, it was a disaster.

My advice, think twice before doing a sorority tank. I used to be a big supporter, but after losing all of mine to Columnaris due to the stress they endured, my opinion changed completely. I had no idea the kind of stress it put on them, and it was heartbreaking to watch Columnaris ravage them. No medication seemed to help, and it was honestly cruel to put them through that.

I've had a female sorority tank, and trust me, it's not all it's cracked up to be. I used to think they were fine, but after losing all mine to Columnaris due to stress, I've changed my tune. The stress they're under is immense, and I've witnessed firsthand how Columnaris can ravage them. It's heartbreaking, and no medication can help. I've come to realize it's actually quite cruel to put them through that.

That sounds like a much better plan. I've actually done some research on bettas myself, and I'd be happy to share some insights. I wrote a paper on them in school, and while it's not perfect, you might find it helpful. I chose bettas as my topic because they're my favorite fish, and I learned a lot about them in the process.

Cheers for that, really helpful. I've got my eye on a Male candy hmpk, there's this stunning blue and white one on eBay that's caught my attention. Problem is, it's gonna be a few weeks before I'm fully ready for him, but I suppose I could temporarily put him in my larger tank for a bit - just hope I don't have to chase him around too much to catch him, that'd be a right pain.

Yeah, those HMPK Bettas are right speedy, I've heard. Might be worth holding off on the purchase till your tank's all set up and cycled, just to make life easier for you and the little fella.

I've got media from another tank and I'll be planting heavily, so it'll be a seeded silent cycle. Best to wait, hope that blue and white candy hmpk is still around when I'm ready, he's pricey so might have a chance.
