Discus Trace

Post by jennyfish »

Hey everyone,

I'm planning to get my first discus soon and I'm considering using Discus Trace - has anyone here used it? Would you recommend it? I'd love to know if you've noticed any benefits.

Thanks!

Re: Discus Trace

I'm not familiar with Discus Trace, but I've always had great luck with the forum sponsors. They've been thoroughly vetted and have an impressive track record of positive feedback. I figure, why take a chance on something unknown when you can get what you need at a fair price from trusted sources right here in the forum?

Re: Discus Trace

I've actually used Discus Trace, it's a Seachem product that's supposed to add beneficial trace elements for Discus. Initially, I was skeptical, but I decided to give it a try. Upon closer inspection, I discovered it contains copper sulfates, which is a major concern for me since I have shrimp and snails in my Discus tanks. Honestly, I just don't see the point of using it, especially with the potential risks it poses to my other aquatic inhabitants.

Re: Discus Trace

From what I've heard, some people who use RO water swear by it, as it helps put back the minerals that get stripped out. Others mix RO with tap water, seems to be a decent alternative.

Re: Discus Trace

From what I've observed, I think Discus get their minerals from their food, rather than the water itself.

I completely agree, especially considering the natural habitat of Discus. They thrive in extremely soft water with minimal dissolved minerals. This fact alone makes me question the necessity of additives like Discus Trace.

The aquarium industry is largely unregulated, which allows manufacturers to make unsubstantiated claims about their products. We see this with Discus minerals, phosphate buffers, and even bacterial start cultures. It's essential for us as hobbyists to be critical of these claims and rely on our own observations and experiences.

Re: Discus Trace

Thanks everyone for the input, really appreciate it. I'm using RO water and wasn't looking to add more chemicals. Thought Discus Trace was a natural way to boost their health. Glad I asked - learned something new.

This forum has been a lifesaver for a newbie like me, thanks for all the advice over the years. Hey Peewee1, just got my discus from Kenny's November shipment - a variety six pack! Super excited, been waiting for ages to have discus. Fingers crossed it all goes smoothly.

Jenna, I have never purchased a discus from anyone but Kenny. None better in my opinion. Which did you order?

Re: Discus Trace

I use Discus Trace. Figured it'd be a good idea since I'm on RO water. Helps replace those important trace minerals, in my opinion.

Re: Discus Trace
I researched using Discus Trace and other additives, but it just didn't add up for me. Logistically and financially, it made more sense to stick with an 80/20 RO to tap water mix.
