Is my scoly dying?

Post by FalconeX »

can't believe it's come to this. it was fine last night, flintix9t night spot, fed it, and then this morning...

cal 480, mag 1470, alk 10.00, ph 8.5, temp 78

no readings for no3 and po4 on salifert kits, which is weird

everything else in the tank is fine - coral and fish are all good, just this one issue

My experience with these, and many other LPS, is they often don't make it in our systems. I've also been keeping an eye on wall hammers - while some do fine, how long do they really last?

Try moving it to a peaceful spot, check for parasites and see if it'll eat when the feeders come out. Good luck.

I've seen this before, a zero reading for both PO4 and NO3 is generally not ideal for large polyp stony animals, might be worth looking into that.

I had it for just 3 weeks, did a dip and then put it in moderate flow with some shade.

Looks like the mouth area's completely gone, and I'm still stumped. All my other fish and corals, they're all thriving, been in the tank for 1 1/2 to 2 yrs now.

Retested the nitrates and they're coming in at 2ppm, still can't get a phosphate reading on the Hanna checker though, stuck at 0.

"ever heard of scoly coral getting this from being placed on the sand? protozoan infection, i've seen it before, usually from coral sitting on the substrate, worth looking into, especially with the damage you're seeing"

Just had a thought, I spot fed my corals with straight rodi, could that have messed with my scoly like it did?

I had a similar experience with a scoly, lost its mouth to crabs after feeding, but it managed to regrow it over time, took a while though.
