I've got a bit of a situation with my new "permanent" houseguest, Vinny the Betta. Three months ago, he was just a random fish in a vase in my husband's work parking lot - healthy, but clearly in need of a better life. Fast forward two months, and one of my husband's coworkers decided Vinny needed a "real home." Three weeks ago, I was asked to fish-sit while the owner was out of town. Next thing I know, I've got Vinny's tank and all his gear on my front porch.
Let's just say the tank was a disaster - filthy, smelly, and poor Vinny had fin rot and a fungal infection. I've been doing my best to turn things around - changed and conditioned the water, added a heater, and started medicating him. I've also upgraded his food from cheap flakes to frozen brine shrimp and dried blood worms. I've had experience with betta's and saltwater fish before, so I'm hoping I can get Vinny back on track.
The good news is that his fungal infection seems to be clearing up, and his fins are starting to grow back. He's even starting to act like a normal betta again. But here's the weird part - he's developed this strange behavior where he'll back up into the air pump stream and shoot himself across the tank. It's like he's having the time of his life, but it's also a bit concerning - I've heard a few thunks as he hits the side of the tank. I'm guessing he's just bored and maybe the bubbles are tickling him or something. The problem is, I need to keep the air pump going for the medication, and it's the smallest one I could find. Any ideas on how to keep Vinny from thumping into the side of the tank?
