sharing thoughts on fish stocking

Post by buzzyfox »

Hi all,

My last post vanished before I got much feedback, so I'm hoping this one sticks. I'm not familiar with fluxx, but I'm eager to hear your thoughts.

I've got a 3ft by 2ft by 2ft tank, plus a 140L sump - that's 360L in total. I'm curious to know how others manage their stock levels, as some seem to keep more than the recommended amount.

My current stock includes two clownfish, a blue damsel, a diadem dottyback, a firefish, and a yellow clown goby, along with about ten hermits and two turbos. The tank's also got a lot of live rock, which was the previous owner's preference.

I'm thinking of adding a bangai cardinal and a canary wrasse. I assume there's no room for a tang, but I'd consider a yellow tang instead of those two.

Any thoughts? Am I on the right track? Could I fit in any more fish? All advice is welcome - I'm new to this and still learning.

Thanks,
G.

Greg, I'm not sure what happened to your last post, but have you tried checking if it's under "View My Topics" - it might be hiding there.

No idea what happened to your post, glad the damsels are finding a new home though.
Beautiful fish, but their aggression is a real turn off.
Personally, I've always been a fan of the islando Damsels, shame they don't stay peaceful.

True, YF, I think that's the thing with damsels - they've got so much character, but it's just not the right kind for a peaceful setup. I liked the Domino, he was a real personality, but in the end, I just couldn't see him fitting in with the community I'm trying to build.

Yeah, I hear you, I'm looking for the same vibe in my tank, no aggression, just a chill community. Limits my choices, but I think it's worth it.

tangs need a lot of space to swim, i'm not convinced a 3ft tank is sufficient for them.

Hi

You could consider a small yellow tang, however, keep in mind that it will eventually outgrow your tank and may require rehoming down the line. With a total system size of 500L, you should be alright for the time being.

Hi all,

Thanks for the advice, it's really helped me make up my mind. I'm happy to leave the tang for a bigger tank, I don't want to risk outgrowing my system. I've decided on the bangai cardinal and the canary wrass, I think they'll be a great addition to my community.

I'll keep you all posted on how I get on, thanks again for your input.

Cheers,

G.

Update on the new additions - the canary wrass is a real winner. It's got a lovely yellowy colour, similar to a tang, and it's always zooming about like a mad thing. I'm reminded of those little caterpillar toys that move about on an invisible string - they're just like that. Plus, they sleep in the substrate and pop out when the lights come on, it's really funny. The bangai cardinal is great too. I'm really happy with how the tank is looking now. I'll try and get some pics up soon.

Cheers again,

G.

Hi guys,

I'm having a bit of a crisis - I thought I was pretty good with computers, but trying to post a photo on here has got me stumped. Any ideas how I can manage it?
