Has anyone tried to breed Albino Platinums?

Post by rustier »

I recently received the last two Albino Platinum discus from citySpin's last shipment, and within a day and a half, they began showing pre-spawning behavior. Yesterday evening, I came home from work to find them spawning on a spawning cone I'd added to their quarantine tank the day before. I was surprised they felt so comfortable to spawn so quickly. From my research, Albino Platinums are difficult to breed due to their fry having trouble finding them because of their lack of darker color. I'm not expecting much from this first spawning, and I'm not even sure the male fertilized the eggs - they're still on the cone, and the parents are being vigilant. What's interesting is the female's color change - her body and the base of her fins have darkened to a light peach color. Has anyone else observed this color change in Albino Platinums? My golden albino pair, which spawns occasionally in a community tank, shows a similar color change in the female - she gets richer in color. This female was pure white just two days ago. Would appreciate any comments from members here.

Congrats on the spawn, Rufus - quite an achievement. I've never bred albinos myself, but I do have some experience with fry struggling to attach to parents. They'd get disoriented and congregate at the top corner or on the sponge filter in my 29-gallon tank. To resolve this, I removed the sponge filter, left the air stone running, and dropped the water level by at least half. This meant no bio-filtration from the time the wigglers detached from the cone until they found their parents. To compensate, I did twice-daily water changes and double-dosed Safe. Once the fry were securely attached, I replaced the sponges and increased the water volume. It worked for me, so I thought I'd share. Good luck with your spawn, and I'm eager to hear how it turns out.

Wow, Rufus, you're really fortunate to have gotten them to spawn so quickly. I've been waiting for months with my own Albino Platinums and haven't had any luck yet - congratulations are definitely in order. Are the pair in the quarantine tank by themselves, or are there other fish with them?

Hi Don, thanks for sharing your experience. I'm doubtful we'll have any viable fry, but if we do, I'll definitely consider your method of removing the sponge filter and lowering the water level. I appreciate the advice, especially the part about compensating with water changes and double dosing Safe. Thanks for the insight, Rufus.

oh wow you are so lucky Rufus, I have had my albino platinums for months waiting for them to lay eggs, don't have any luck so far. Congrats. Are they in the tank by themselves?

I feel pretty lucky too. Never thought I'd see the day these two would spawn, especially in a 20-gallon quarantine tank. I mean, it's not like they had time to settle in or anything - less than four days and they're already going at it. I've got three other Albino Platinums that have never shown any interest in breeding, so this is a nice surprise.

Well don't be jealous just yet, I'm still in the dark about the viability of this spawn. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, and as I mentioned earlier, I do have a male and female, but I never actually witnessed the male fertilizing the eggs. We'll just have to wait and see what the future holds for these eggs.

Congrats on the spawn, Rufus. I've been searching for albino pairs myself and I know how tough it can be. I'd recommend trying Don's method, and also experiment with color LED lights to see if that helps with the fry attachment. Keeping the water extremely clean is also crucial. Good luck with the spawn, and I hope it's viable.
