Welso coral in distress, need help

Post by Flaremax »

Evening everyone,

I've had this Welso for about a year and a half now.

My tank maintenance was a bit off over the summer, and that's when the issues started. The only corals that suffered were my Welso and scoly. Thankfully, the scoly is back on track, eating daily and looking healthy again. My tank parameters are also back to normal.

I've been doing some research on coral rescue techniques, trying to find ways to save this Welso. Unfortunately, it just keeps getting worse.

To protect it from the crabs, I've got the coral out of the sand. I'm also dosing my tank with LPS amino acid concentrate and trying to feed the coral Fauna marin LPS pellets - been doing that for about 2 months now. The skin keeps recessing, though. There are still three mouths on the coral, but only one is taking food.

The coral is in a medium flow area, and my tank specs are: 93G Cube, BRS 2 part for stable ALK and CA, and Hydra 52 lighting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Also worth noting I treated this coral with Coral RX about 3 weeks ago, trying to rule out any parasites that might've been contributing to its decline.

Looks like a bacterial infection has taken hold of the coral. I'm no expert, but isn't Coral RX similar to Revive by TLF in terms of its application and purpose? I've always thought that RX and Revive were more geared towards removing pests, whereas iodine dips were better suited for tackling bacterial infections.

From my understanding, fleshy corals can quickly succumb to bacterial infections, and unfortunately, it seems like your coral might be past the point of recovery. I would consider dipping it again to try and combat the infection, and also continue feeding it to see if that helps.

Thanks for the advice, I'll give it a try with Lugol's tonight. I'm a bit concerned about my other softies now - should I be worried about this being contagious? Should I dip them too, even if they look fine for now?

I don't think it's contagious, but I'd check the others just in case. Had a brain coral go through the same thing, 6 months later it was a bubble coral - dipped it and that was the end of it. Thing is, our tanks are never as clean as we think, bacteria's everywhere. Sometimes something just bothers them, like an animal picking at 'em... but the iodine dip might just do the trick now.

Just did the dip, now I'm wondering if it's a one-time thing or if I should do another dip later this week?

The dip should've cleaned the coral of the infection, allowing it to heal without bacteria getting in the way. Keep an eye on it, and try feeding it - that'll help it recover faster. If you notice new infections starting, dip it again. Post the process so we can follow along.
