Lone Adult Discus
Lone Adult Discus
I've got a lone Red Eagle discus in my 75g, used to have a buddy but a heater malfunction did him in a couple months back. Luckily my Red Eagle made it through, but now he's hiding a bit more. I'm thinking of adding another discus or two, wondering if it'd make him happier or lead to fighting. He's a big boy, almost dinner plate size, so would I want to add smaller or similar-sized discus? I've had him for so long, I don't want to cause him any stress, but I'm not sure if discus get lonely. Was thinking of just redoing the scape, but figured I'd ask for some input first. Any thoughts would be great.

I think getting more discus is the way to go. If you can swing it, try to get at least three around the 5" size. I've got a similar situation with a lone 5" discus in my 60 gallon, and I've recently picked up four 3" ones that I'm quarantining before introducing them to him. Honestly, I've been feeling a bit guilty about leaving him solo for so long.

Definitely get some more Discus. If you can afford 5" size get at least three. I have a lone 5" discus right now in a 60 gallon. I bought four 3" r's and going to put them with him after quarantine. I feel bad that he is a loner right now.
I was thinking along the same lines. I'd be willing to get larger discus if I knew they wouldn't disrupt my big guy. That's my main concern - adding new discus, what's the best size to avoid aggression?

Anything 3” and above I would assume be fine. However, when introducing new fish, rearrange the tank to reset any territories etc.
I'm on the same page as you, can't just drop a new discus in and expect harmony.

I've had success with somethingphishy.com - they have a great selection of Asian-based strains, including the diamond blues I recently picked up. Their shipping is top-notch, with well-insulated packaging and heating pads. Another option is SimplyDiscus.com, although they're currently out of stock for the next month or so. Good luck finding what you're looking for!
