Hi there
Got a bit of a dilemma, my LFS had a pair of blue spot jawfish, £260 is a bit steep if you ask me. They've been reserved for me, put down a £50 deposit to keep them safe.
Think they'll be alright with my yellow watchman goby? My sand is 2" deep, should be okay, right? Been waiting for ages for a pair, and they told me they're rare, but didn't mention the price tag, lol.
They'll be eating soft corals and LPS, think that's a good diet for them?
That's what they look like, gorgeous aren't they? Should I take the plunge or leave them? What do you guys reckon?

Re: observations of my blue spotted jawfish pair
I'm not familiar with UK prices, but I do know pairs are hard to come by. One thing to consider is the sand depth - 2" won't be enough, they need around 5" to burrow comfortably. They'll create a burrow and move around in it. Having some small rocks on hand would be a good idea too, the kind they can pick up and move around with their mouth to help build their burrow.
Re: observations of my blue spotted jawfish pair
Blue spot jawfish are indeed pretty rare in the hobby, mainly due to how difficult they are to catch in the wild. Other than the need for deep sand to burrow, they're relatively easy to care for, being reef safe fish. Decent sized tanks are also a must, probably bigger than a nano.
Re: observations of my blue spotted jawfish pair
got a big enough tank, 879l, so that should be alright. I was thinking of adding more coflake sand to make it deeper, that way they'll have enough room to burrow.
will they be ok with my yellow watchman goby, or should i be worried about them getting on?

Re: observations of my blue spotted jawfish pair
I've seen singles go for around 125, so 260 for a pair doesn't seem too bad. Just keep an eye on your mag levels when adding all that new sand.

Cheers mate, so you think they'll be alright with my yellow watchman goby then?
The blue spot jawfish are a definite pair, the lfs showed me the invoice and they're a mated pair, lovely colors on them as well

What do you guys think then, should i go for them?
think they're mated pair so that's a bonus, will they spawn in time do you think? also how easy are they to breed and bring up the babies, cheers

Re: observations of my blue spotted jawfish pair
I've never raised jawfish babies, but that'd be a sweet bonus. As long as they're active and visible, I'm happy.
Re: observations of my blue spotted jawfish pair
Make sure to observe them eating before bringing them home. The adult size of these fish suggests the babies are quite small, likely making them a challenge to raise, just my two cents though.talonix wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2024 12:43 am Hi there

I'm not sure I'd part with that kind of cash for fish that'll likely only make an appearance at dinner time. But then, you slap the 'rare' label on something and suddenly it's a must-have - I suppose that's just human nature. They do look stunning, but even I'd think twice about the price tag, unless I could potentially breed them and sell the babies on - which I'm assuming would be a challenge, or we'd see more of them in local shops.
