Is my tank too small for mbuna?

Post by Aquafan »

I've got an 85 gallon tank, 3x2x2, and I'm thinking of turning it into a mbuna community tank. Thing is, I've read that mbunas need tanks at least 4 feet long. Is my tank big enough ?

It's a tricky situation, but a colony of Saulosi could work in your tank. They're a relatively small species, and they're known for being quite peaceful. The fact that they're colourful would definitely make for an interesting display. It's not a guaranteed success, but it might just pay off.

You could also consider yellow labs or mpunga, they're pretty small and could work well in your setup.

It's a decent size, although short across the front. The key to making it work with the suggestions above will be in the planning of your decor. Sticking with smaller species like yellow labs or sprengerae rustys would be a good idea, and I'd steer clear of the more aggressive ones. The tank has a good front to back depth and height, which is a plus. I've had experience with Mbuna set ups in smaller tanks, like my old 55-gallon three-footers, and they worked out fine. I sold plenty of rustys and yellow labs from those tanks, and they bred well. I just made sure to avoid the larger species and the ones that are super territorial.
