A funny moment with sheila's fries

Post by fableon »

I finally made the move with my yellow lab last Wednesday and she's just spawned today.

I've only spotted two eggs so far - one in a rock hole and the other in a fake plant. She wolfed down the tiny bit of food I put in for her.

I'm keen to start the fry on Hikari first bites, but I'm not sure when to start - after I remove her, I suppose? Can I try her with some pea later, or is it too soon given she hasn't eaten much yet?

She looks fine, not underweight, and seems happy and active. Should I plan to move her back to the main tank at the weekend, gradually increasing her food until then?

Congratulations on the new fry. I'm sure it's a relief that she's finally spat them out. Has she definitely released all of them, or could she still be holding some back in her buccal cavity? You've only spotted two so far, after all.

In terms of the fry tank, I'd recommend keeping the bottom bare - no substrate - to make cleaning a breeze. When you start offering them food, just leave it in for a couple of hours and then vacuum out any uneaten bits.

If you're certain she's spat all the fry, I'd move her back to the main tank as soon as possible.

I'm pretty sure she's spat all the fry now, there are at least three that I've spotted and she's eating normally again. She doesn't have that puffed up look about her that she had before, so I think she's done.

The tank does have a sand substrate, but I've seen a couple of the fry venturing out to eat the food I've put in for her, so I'm hoping they'll start eating up if I only put in small amounts at a time.

I've heard some people say it's a good idea to fatten her up before moving her back to the main tank, but I'm not sure if that's just if she's underweight - she doesn't look skinny to me, so I'm not sure if it applies in this case.

I think I'd put her straight back into the main tank now, she seems happy and active, and eating normally, plus the fry are coming out to eat her food already.

Moved her last night and she's settling in alright, but the male's already on her case so I'm guessing it won't be long before she's holding again. Definitely just the three fry, they're doing great.
