Need help with My discus disease?

Post by Raptor »

Hi, my discus has been acting stiff for 5 days now, it just started a few days back. The other 4 bigger ones were fine until now. I've tried antibiotic and anti-parasite meds in the water, but nothing seems to be working.

I've been searching everywhere online, no luck so far. The discus is still swimming, but it's really struggling to find food and is getting skinnier by the day.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Your water conditions, what are they like? How often do you do water changes? Why are the snails dead? Unfortunately, that fish doesn't look like it's going to make it. What's the tank size? How many discus do you have? I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I need all the info I can get to try and figure out what's going on.

Re: Need help with My discus disease?

I just tested my water, pH is 7.0 and temperature is 27C. I change the water twice a month, on the 1st and 15th normally. My tank is 100cmx50cmx40cm, with 5 discus, and this is the smallest one. I've had this discus for 3 months now, and it hasn't grown at all. To be honest, I'm not optimistic about saving it either. The snails have been there for a while, the big ones are dead, but the small ones are still alive. I recently installed a UV light in my tank, but I'm not sure if it's a parasite issue.

Honestly, I'm not optimistic about this discus's chances. With a gravel bottom tank, dead snails, and only two water changes a month, it's likely a water quality issue, not parasites. Although, parasites are probably present due to the gravel and infrequent water changes.

I'd recommend reading up on water quality on this forum. There's a really informative thread on bioload and biomass that's worth checking out.

That's pretty much it, I think. I'd also add that 27C is on the chilly side - 30C would be a better temperature for your discus. For now, I'd recommend doing 20% water changes daily. By the end of the week, bump it up to 50% every other day. Keep it at that level until all your discus are healthy. Water changes are crucial for discus - anyone who says otherwise probably won't be around here for long.

I'm inclined to agree, the discus seems to be beyond recovery. To avoid this in the future, regular water changes are a must, unless you're running an advanced anoxic filtration system. Don't be discouraged though - these setbacks are an opportunity to learn and improve. Discus can be incredibly rewarding once you get the hang of caring for them.
