Branching lps corals

Post by bronzeoak »

I've got a collection of corals - two hammers, a frogspawn, three candy canes, and a duncan. They all have between 2-5 heads. As they grow and branch out, I'm wondering if the base or trunk of the colony gets larger to support it?

I've noticed that some of the older skeletons I've got have lost their flesh over time, so the base itself doesn't necessarily get larger. What happens instead is the colony grows into this massive tree, essentially engulfing the original base, forming a huge cluster of heads. No need to worry about support in that case. However, with the Duncan, it's a bit different since the entire stock typically has living flesh - it'll tend to get fatter and sprout new heads lower down. That makes sense, trailblazere.
