Floating plants for a 29-gallon tank

I was thinking of making a floating square to contain my new floating plants. I saw this idea online where you can use plastic straws and attach a suction cup to the side of my tank, then tie some fishing line to hold it in place. Would the plastic straw be safe for my tank, or could it leach chemicals into the water?
