I'm still not fully understanding why you think I don't need RO/DI. I've done my research and many people have trouble keeping Discus healthy in well water. I want to start from scratch and mineralize to bring the water to the correct parameters. I'm not trying to solve a problem I'm trying to prevent one.
I think it's great that your water works for your Discus, but I'm not looking to just make large, frequent water changes. I want to create the perfect environment for my fish. I'm not trying to play with water chemistry, I'm trying to create a stable environment.

wilde, I think you're missing the point. I'm setting up for Discus, not the other fish I mentioned. They were just examples because you asked for one. My water parameters were fine for them, but they still had issues. That tells me there's something else wrong with the water that I need to address before keeping Discus.

I'm in a similar boat as wilde here. You're looking to get an RO system without being entirely sure if it's necessary. For Discus, I'd advise against using water from the softener. Instead, try this: fill a bucket with water straight from your well, before it hits the softener. Check the pH, then add an air stone and test the pH again. If the change is less than 0.4, you're good to go with straight well water for your Discus. I know folks who keep Discus with pH levels in the high 9s.
If you're dead set on getting an RO system, I'd recommend checking out Bulk Reef Supply. I only use mine for breeding purposes; all my other tanks get aged and heated tap water.

Jason, I think wilde is on the right track, the soft water could've been the issue for your other fish. What everyone's getting at is, your well water might be okay. Do the test Liz suggested, but I also think since your ottos, tetras, and plecos are doing fine with the softened water, that might be okay too. Yeah, a lot of people use RO/DI systems, but not everyone needs to. I'm guessing your water is probably fine.
